After the defeat against Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night many supporters believed the end of Hodgson was imminent and his sacking would happen within hours of the full-time whistle. Rumours from multiple anonymous ‘sources’ were circulating on the internet stating that “he’s been sacked”, “he’s due to be sacked in the next 24/48hrs”, “he’s signed the papers to be sacked”, “he’s signed the papers to be sacked but it’ll be announced later”, etc. etc. The mainstream media did their part too and were in speculation overdrive, analysing the fact that Hodgson didn't drive himself to training, that he was seen leaving with suspiciously large bags from Melwood and other over-analysis of his every move. The rumours circulated with lightning pace and so far, every single one of them has proven to be false as FSG have stuck by the manager. At least for now.
I’m of the opinion that in his 6 months, Hodgson has failed to inspire the Liverpool team or its supporters. A manager that was brought in by the previous regime to lift the club and the players has simply not worked. The only player to have improved under his leadership has been Lucas Leiva. But this may be down to the player's individual growth as oppose to the influence of the manager, something that is open to debate. Perhaps the job for Roy Hodgson was too big, perhaps he underestimated what lay ahead of him and perhaps he underestimated how much was expected of him. I am with the majority and believe that his time at Anfield is limited because of the results, the apparent lack of faith that he has amongst the supporters on the terraces and the discourse that has surrounded him since his arrival. When he goes is anybody’s guess, and until FSG make up their minds it is exactly that, anybody’s guess.
Amongst all the discussion, what is disturbing to see is the air of vitriol that is gathering some pace against the owners. This hasn’t been evident in the stands but has been on internet forums and phone-ins, with supporters venting their frustration at the apparent inactivity of FSG. It is definitely a minority of the supporters with this opinion but it is there nevertheless.
Personally, I cannot understand their annoyance with FSG. Let’s not forget that they have been at the helm for less than 6 months, took over a club that was financially in complete disarray and have yet to complete all the high-level appointments in the club’s hierarchy. We’re also not privy to the work that they may be doing behind the scenes or what their strategy is regarding a new appointment and transfers. From what we have seen and heard from them, they appear to be with LFC for the long haul. They seem astute business people and ones unlikely to make decisions solely to please the fanbase. ‘Calculated’ is a word that springs to mind when listening to John Henry.
So as it seems, Hodgson is still in charge for the FA Cup game against Manchester Utd on Sunday, possibly thereafter too. The team will need to put in an outstanding performance if we are to overcome this tough challenge at Old Trafford, so let’s get behind them and hope for a result that we can all be proud of.
Thanks for the update! Brilliant work! Suzi
